Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch, will speak on “Human Rights and the Campaign Against Terrorism,” Tuesday, November 19, at noon in the Hampton Room of the Malott Commons on the Scripps College campus. This lecture and luncheon are free and open to the public; seating is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Roth, a former federal prosecutor, worked on the Iran-Contra investigation and has exposed human rights abuses throughout the world. The focal point of his work has been devoted to issues of justice and accountability for abuses of human rights, standards governing military conduct in time of war, the human rights policies of the United States and the United Nations, and the human rights responsibilities of multinational businesses.
Human Rights Watch was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997 for their work to ban landmines. They are currently pursuing campaigns on every continent with additional focus on an international criminal court, arms, children’s rights, HIV/AIDS, international justice, prisons, refugees, and women’s rights. In addition, since September 11, 2001, it has focused attention on the effects on the “war against terrorism” on human rights, both within the United States and abroad.
