Winston Ou Presents “Teaching Math as a Non-superstition”

Winston Ou, Scripps College assistant professor of mathematics, will speak on “Mill and Mathematics: Teaching Math as a Non-superstition,” presented by the Malott Commons Tuesday Noon Academy, on April 26. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Professor Ou will talk about the distinction between knowledge and superstition made in J.S. Mill’s treatise On Liberty (previously used in Scripps’s Core I program) and give various examples of commonly held mathematical superstitions.

Professor Ou teaches mathematics courses, as well as Core I, at Scripps College. His research focuses on the theory and applications of harmonic analysis. Professor Ou was the recipient of an NSF graduate fellowship, was voted “Student-Choice Professor of the Year” by Scripps College students in 2010, and awarded the Mary W. Johnson Faculty Achievement Award for Teaching in 2011.

The Tuesday Noon Academy is a weekly, one-hour series of lectures held in the Hampton Room of the Malott Commons. The doors will open at 11:45 a.m. Bring your own lunch or purchase lunch at the Malott Commons Dining Hall. Dessert and coffee are provided.
