Scripps Presents has announced that its virtual programming for the 2020–21 season will center on the theme of “The Future.” As part of its fifth-anniversary celebration, Scripps Presents will partner with other programs and events series around the country to address topics such as the future of language, race, food, science and more.

Stacey Wood, professor of psychology and Molly Mason Jones Chair in Psychology, described common financial elder abuse trends in a Newsweek article about the alleged financial abuse of Star Trek actress Nichelle Nichols. While Woods did not speak specifically about the Nichols case, she likened abusers’ tactics, such as isolation and dependency, to a “siege mentality, us against them.”

Lillian Hahn ’21 Feeds Health Care Workers’ Bodies and Spirits
Amid the confusion and misinformation that defines so much of the public’s understanding of COVID-19, one thing that there seems to be unilateral agreement upon is the adverse mental health effects of the pandemic on frontline health care workers. Lillian Hahn ’21, a science management major on the public health track, identified a cohort among health care workers who may be even harder hit: those who work the night shift.

The Student Leadership Institute (SLI) of Scripps’ Laspa Center for Leadership, held each August, is the starting point for the center’s annual programming, a time when student leaders come together as a community and plan for the year ahead. But during a pandemic that has rendered the patterns and practices of daily life unrecognizable, there is also the unanimous understanding across industries and organizations that leaders must now rethink how we convene, interact, and act.
