Olive Harvest’s Return Creates Organic Space for Education, Community, and Sustainability

On November 5, Scripps hosted its traditional Olive Harvest, an event that furthers the College’s sustainability efforts by utilizing the campus’s edible plants as a food source. More than 200 students, faculty, staff, and members of the surrounding Claremont community harvested approximately 700 pounds of olives.

Lightning in a Bottle: Scripps’ Olive Oil Wins at International Competition

Scripps’ olive oil has won a bronze medal award at the 2020 Los Angeles International Extra Virgin Olive Oil Competition. The label, designed by Scripps staff member Christine Olbrech, administrative assistant for the Office of Information Technology, also won a bronze medal for package design.

Last fall, Scripps welcomed Lesley Swick as director of facilities operations and sustainability. Swick comes to Scripps after serving for over 10 years as a sustainability, Green Building, and LEED consultant, having worked with clients such as the Los Angeles County Metro Transit Authority, UCSD, Toyota, and the City of Santa Monica.

Congratulations to Madison Seto ’21, student winner of the Scripps Olive Oil label competition! A biochemistry major by day and calligrapher with her own Etsy shop by night, Seto was inspired to enter the competition because of her love of Scripps and her involvement in the olive harvest and other environmental initiatives on campus.
