Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery Interns Present Ancient Traditions, Modern Japan
A delicately patterned lady’s comb, an intricate woodblock print, a vibrant floral kimono: these objects and others on display in Ancient Traditions, Modern Japan: Japanese Art During the 20th Century are contemporary, but they have their roots in centuries-old Japanese traditions. The exhibition, organized by Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery interns Marielle Epstein ’18, Gillian Holzer ’19, and Milena Carothers ’19, invites viewers to explore ways in which traditional Japanese art forms have been employed and adapted by artists working in the 20th century.

Career Planning & Resources: New Program Helps Scripps Students Navigate Important Financial Decisions
No one can avoid making financial decisions in life, but Forbes reported in 2015 that only 57 percent of Americans are financially literate. The Carlotta Welles ’39 Center for Career Planning & Resources (CP&R) wants to ease the stress and confusion. This semester, the center launched the Financial Literacy Program with the goal of helping Scripps students make smart, informed financial decisions during college and after graduation.

The Scripps Experience: The Motley Coffeehouse Student Bake Off
Since 2011, the Motley has also been home to an annual Student Bake Off, pitting entrants from across the 5Cs against each other to see who can make the tastiest baked goods, as judged by their peers. Winners have their treats added to the Motley menu for the week.

The Scripps Experience: Chronicling the Experiences of First-Gen Students
As the College welcomed its largest-ever cohort of first-year students this past fall, the First-Generation @ Scripps Newsletter was preparing to introduce the Scripps community to a few of those new faces on campus. The newsletter, currently in its fifth volume, is edited by the First-Gen Program co-coordinators and speaks to the experiences of Scripps students who are the first in their families to attend college. Co-coordinators Evelyn Gonzalez ’18 and Clarisse Salazar ’18 decided that “firsts” would be an appropriate theme to kick off the most recent issue.

The Scripps Experience: The Babes and Blankets CLORG
Babes and Blankets, the club/organization (CLORG at Scripps), meets weekly to knit and crochet blankets, scarves, and other yarn crafts, which they then donate to local nonprofit organizations and groups in need. Babes and Blankets partners with Binky Patrol, which gives baby blankets to hospitals, and the Red Scarf Project, which provides scarves to foster youth in college, among others.

The Scripps Experience: The Scripps-in-Residence Program
Scripps’ annual Scripps in Residence program— now in its third year—has hosted distinguished alumnae and parents on campus to share their professional journeys as well as offer wisdom and advice about blazing a career path. Typically held over three days in October, the program offers an array of opportunities for Scripps students to hear from guests, including discussion panels, lunches, browsing room chats, and one-on-one informational interviews. For students who are beginning to think about their post-graduation pursuits, Scripps in Residence can help bring clarity and insight to setting oneself up for those next steps.

In August, Career Planning & Resources (CP&R) expanded their career exploration and networking offerings, hosting its first trek to Bay Area firms specializing in publishing, public relations, and marketing. The trek was sponsored by parents David and Moni Butze P’18, who also hosted a networking dinner for alumnae and students.

The Scripps Experience: The Annual Capstone Day Soccer Game
While Capstone Day celebrates academic achievement, it has a playful side, too, thanks to Professor of French Thierry Boucquey. While helping to pilot Capstone Day in 2008, Professor Boucquey proposed capping off the events with a friendly soccer game between Scripps faculty, staff, and seniors on Scripps’ Alumnae Field.
