Scripps College Policy on Encampments

Scripps College is committed to fostering an environment that balances individual freedoms with respect for the rights and dignity of others, as asserted in our Principles of Community. As members of the Scripps community, we accept our individual and collective responsibility to uphold these principles as we participate in and contribute to College life. With this understanding, we address the issue of encampments on the Scripps College campus, balancing our commitment to free expression with our responsibility to maintain an environment conducive to our core academic mission.

Policy Provisions
Scripps College prohibits (i) camping in vehicles, tents, or other structures on campus, (ii) the construction of any structure on campus without the College’s express permission, and (iii) sleeping in any outdoor spaces. The College reserves the right to take appropriate action when activities become disruptive, non-peaceable, infringe upon the rights of others, threaten property or safety, or impede or unreasonably burden College operations.

Policy Implementation

In the event of an encampment on Scripps College property:

  • The President of Scripps College will engage encamped individuals in a dialogue to resolve the conflict and determine the initial course of action regarding policy violations.
  • Actions to be taken may include, without limitation, (i) notifying individuals of the violation of College policy, (ii) requesting and working with individuals to vacate College property, and (iii) after exhausting alternative methods of resolution, requesting assistance from local law enforcement.
  • Individuals may be subject to disciplinary procedures under applicable policies.
  • Scripps College may hold individuals responsible for damages and costs incurred due to encampment.

This policy will be reviewed annually by the College administration.
