Scripps College Old Style was designed over the years 1941 to 1947 by Frederic W. Goudy as a private typeface for the Scripps College Press. It was designed and cast as a 16 pt. face on an 18 pt. body. He made matrices for the 14 and 12 pt. sizes later. (A small amount of the 14pt Italic and Roman have been cast, but none of the 12 pt.). There are also matrices and castings for the 24 pt. titling face. As with most typefaces, he did not design an accompanying set of Italic figures to go with the old style Roman figures. Since we are having this typeface digitized by noted typographer Sumner Stone this year, it seemed a perfect project for my students to work on for this book. (They used Fontographer on a Power Macintosh 8600 after drawing the numbers about 7 inches tall and scanning them in Photoshop.) In addition, the lockup had four text areas, each 35 pi high and 15 or 30 pi wide, and every time the students placed their type in the press, they had to calculate the exact number of points (35 pi is 420 points) to make sure their type fit exactly. And so the focus of the stories in this books became numbers. Seven students from two of the five Claremont Colleges created 55 books, each made up of nine signatures of up to four 7.5 x 18″ pieces of Bugra Caramel paper. These pages each received between one and four print runs on three Scripps College Press Vandercook presses. They were printed in the Scripps College Old Style typeface, 14 and 18 pt., with large digitized Italic numbers printed from magnesium plates and imagery carved from linoleum, all in ink colors 492, 548, and Black 643800. The books are bound in Asahi bookcloth, number 2429D and are inlaid with a 1.25 x 4″ piece of magnesium. There are 60 copies in the edition.
