Choix de Vivre

The process of producing a limited edition letterpress book involves extensive decision-making. A plethora of choices is inherent to the bookmaking process, and indeed to everyday life. We therefore focused on the act of making a decision, explore possible consequences and even evaluate decisions that are made for you. This led us to our title for this book about life’s choices, a pun on joie de vivre. The paper chosen was Nideggen, and we printed with 12 pt. Centaur typeface. Images were carved from linoleum blocks, some of which were reduction blocks; sometimes acrylic get medium was added for texture. The binding was run through a small etching press just after gluing on the purple bookcloth, so it was embossed with an image of flying birds by using a modified linoleum block from the book. The size is 9.5 x 9 inches and is printed in an edition of 90 copies.
