Deep Rooted
– Out of Print –
For the sixtieth anniversary of the founding of the Scripps College Press, we wanted to generate a book about something uniquely Scripps, so we embraced the newly formed Tree Tour, developed by a Scripps student, Megan Ritchie. She, along with the buildings and grounds staff, chose to highlight twenty-four examples for the tour from over one hundred species on campus. Thinking that further descriptions by our students would enhance that idea, we chose to start with trees as the focus of our semester book project. Students took the tour with Megan and spent additional time experiencing their chosen trees. After writing those descriptions, they developed stories inspired by what they had experienced. Eleven students participated in printing this book by letterpress, on four Vandercook presses. The beautiful Zerkall Book paper was hand ripped and painted with walnut ink conveying “essence of tree” images. Descriptions of twenty-four trees on the new Scripps Tree Tour were developed and printed, and stories inspired by trees and recent events were hand typeset and printed. Further imagery was made by overprinting with linoleum blocks or by additional painting with acrylics. The type chosen for the front and back matter, and the tree descriptions, is 14 pt. Scripps College Old Style. Students chose various typefaces for the interior of their sections. It seemed so appropriate when we found the bark paper for the cover and sewed the book over bark paper tapes reinforced with Tyvek. This is a book not about trees, but of trees. The process started September 4; then came the events of September 11. There was a subtle shift; you will see how books reflect their time. The size is 7.75 wide x 10.5″ tall and was printed in an edition of 75 copies.
