The Color Book

The concept of this book was to explore color. The students were asked to paint a swatch of one of the Winsor-Newton Designers Gouache colors and describe it. Since that’s impossible, they developed poetic descriptions. These descriptions were first printed on a broadside with color swatches painted next to the descriptions. Next, they were asked to print the descriptions in book form, with a linoleum cut above the description. This time their challenge was to mix the printing ink for the image to match the color swatch they were describing. The book pages of Somerset Satin were folded at the foredge and glued to accordion folded Japanese paper, so that the book could be displayed in a circle. The covers were bright purple bookcloth from France. Various 12 pt. typefaces were used. The display type was Kabel Extra Bold. The size is 5″ x 6.5″. The edition was 45 copies.
