This Tends to Happen
– Out of Print –
Scripps freshmen are required to read William Gibson’s Pattern Recognition as they enter Scripps College as a preparation to discuss post-modernity. Gibson asserts that everything is pattern recognition. In this vein, students in the typography class decided how they would define patterns, writing texts with the idea of presenting text as image, and image as readable text, in order to find meaning in their pattern-making. Seven students worked independently at the Scripps College Press on four Vandercook presses to print a limited edition of this book by letterpress. Twelve point Centaur was used for the patterned texts. Several papers were chosen, including Nideggen, Frankfurt Creme, Frankfurt White, and paper from Thailand. The images have been printed from linoleum blocks or as relief engravings from magnesium blocks. The sewn double-accordion binding holds the separate sections for removal. The paper for the binding was made by Cave Paper, with letterforms magically lifted in the vat from Gerry Lange’s rejected papers. Size is 10.5 x 5.5 in an edition of 99 copies.
