Each semester a diverse group of students arrives at the Scripps College Press and works toward a common goal of creating a cohesive artists’ book. This semester we played with a novel approach: various physical and emotional attributes of a major character were suggested by the group. As individual stories were written about her, with no pre-conceived sequence, our characters’ personality became clearer and evolved further. The stories played off each other as they were arranged, revised, and rearranged multiple times until we were satisfied with the arc of the coalesced narrative. Playful pop-ups lightened the serious mood and display our characters’ maturing personality, while the play of colors enlivens the page. Type: 12/14 Centaur and Arrighi on a 25 or 60 pi measure.
